Improving the lives of a billion people is not easy! Especially when we consider the complexity of our ever-changing and increasingly connected planet. However, the challenges of the future are accompanied by new tools that are also undergoing exponential change.

Find Your Billion is a free interactive one-day workshop, co-designed by Singularity University and offered in partnership with the SingularityU New Zealand Summit, for students aged 13-19 offered across New Zealand in September 2016. The next generation - what we call the exponential generation - are already socially conscious and this event will focus on empowering this motivated community. Participants will develop a greater awareness of technologies and the biggest challenges faced by the planet. They will also begin working in diverse groups to take action in the present to shape our future.

Don’t wait for the future to happen. Start creating it now.

Brett Schilke
Director of Impact & Resident Instigator, Exponential Generation Initiative
Singularity University

Brett is an idea scientist, tech optimist, storyteller, and #hashtagaddict, still working toward his childhood dream of changing the world. He hails from Wisconsin and at the moment, he’s the Director of Impact & Resident Instigator for the Exponential Generation Initiative at Singularity University in Silicon Valley, leading global initiatives that empower individuals from every generation to positively impact billions of lives.

Brett is fascinated by the intersection of education, technology, and social impact. Over the past ten years, he criss-crossed the globe working in international education and community development in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. He directed two NGOs, designed learning experiences for the United States Congress and the UAE Ministry of Education, served as adjunct faculty in community impact at a university in Russia, and only once bribed his way across an international border with just 63 dollars and a rotisserie chicken in hand. He was also co-founder and CEO of the educational development company IDEAco, and co-created the City X Project, an innovation and problem solving curriculum used in more than 75 countries and nationwide in China.

Along the way, he's made second homes in the middle of Siberia and in the mountains of Transylvania. (Yes, the former gets cold. No, the latter does not have vampires.) When he is not on an adventure or dreaming up ways to help people change the world, Brett loves to tell stories, feed people, celebrate the beauty of puns, and give far more high fives than he probably should.

She is passionate about turning schools into  #learningecosystems, where all learners are heard and have a chance to co-design learning. Cheryl believes that education needs to address the grand challenges of the world and that each of us has a role to play in making a positive impact. This requires curiosity about the world of exponential technologies, a desire to collaborate and the courage to stand tall for what you believe in.

Cheryl is a director on a number of boards including the New Zealand Brain Research Institute and Haeata Community Campus. She is a member of the Association for Professional Futurists and the World Futures Society. She lives in Christchurch, New Zealand but treats the world as her workspace.

Chris Clay
Educational adventurer

Hailing from the UK, Chris is well known for having had more jobs than might be considered normal. Since leaving school Chris has been a milkman, nightclub promoter, drug-testing official, journalist, specialist in frog genetics, head-hunter and science teacher!

Right now Chris spends his days developing schemes that provide people with seriously cool experiences that help them learn. Over the last 15 years this has involved working for a wide range of schools, universities, museums, corporates, NGOs and governments across five continents.

Named International Innovative Educator by Microsoft in 2011, Chris now works in a range of areas including science, technology and how we might use education to create desirable futures. When he’s not doing this he’s building just about anything from cardboard and tickling his 2 kids.

Chris is a director of a range of companies that seek to make the world a better place and acts as an advisor to a number of others. He is a regular speaker at conferences and you can check out his TEDx talk here.

Singularity University was founded to educate, inspire, and empower a new generation of leaders to understand and leverage the power of exponentially developing technologies.

From our inception in 2008, SU has empowered individuals from more than 100 countries to apply exponentially growing technologies—artificial intelligence & robotics, biotechnology, nanotechnology & digital fabrication, networks & computing systems and medicine & neuroscience—to address humanity’s grand challenges: education, energy, environment, food, global health, poverty, security, shelter, space and water.

Our programmes are led by a staff of cutting-edge practitioners and thought leaders who serve as mentors, advisors, and guest lecturers in our programs, working alongside world-class faculty.

Our Exponential Generation Initiative and Find Your Billion programmes are focused on bringing young people and educators around the world into an awareness of technology and trends shaping our world, and to give them the tools and resources to harness their own potential to impact billions of lives.

SingularityU New Zealand's goal is to help New Zealand understand, adapt to and thrive in an exponentially changing world.
